Violets

Everybody loves Violets! Violet, depending on what mutation it's combined with will result in many different shades and variations. The Whitefaced medium double factor violet is perhaps one of the most sought after combinations. Many people won't necessarily know they have a double factor violet till they breed the bird and they get a whole litter of violets! Violet can be combined with any mutation to produce other variations of those birds. However, in the Ino mutation, the violet is masked and in general cannot be seen. Sometimes in Ino birds that do carry(or are) violet, a very light bluish-violet sheen can be sen under good lighting. In slate birds(2 dark factors), the violet is also covered up, but again as in Ino birds, the violet can be passed onto their offspring, so you may get some surprises when you breed Slates and Inos.

Breeding Goals: Produce a Whitefaced Violet bird with an all white face and a very deep violet coloring.

Here's a picture of 4 Whitefaced Violet babies that are around 4-5 weeks old. The mother bird was indeed a Whitfaced Medium Double Violet, and all birds inherited at least 1 violet factor.

Here is a beautiful picture of a Whitefaced Double Violet male bird with no dark factors. A bird that has has 2 violet factors and no dark factors produces a very "blue" bird with a violet rump.

[Metamorphosis] This is a Whitefaced Medium Double Violet baby. It's often thought that violet is the most beautiful and deep when combined with the whitefaced mutation and 1 dark factor(aka cobalt). As the bird gets older and molts, it will have an all whiteface and the violet coloring throughout the body will deepen. (This did happen, since it's now 2006, and that picture was taken in 2004 : )

[Metamorphosis] This is a picture of a Whitefaced Violet baby with no dark factors. This is a pretty mutation as well. Notice however that because there is no dark factor to enhance the violet that the coloring becomes almost turquoise or light blue. The rump however still maintains the violet coloring.

This is a Medium Blue Violet Baby (formerly known as Dutch Blue). As the baby gets older and molts, you will se a peach brow come out. You can already see a peach tinge to the face which was not there on the Whitefaced babies. This bird only carries a single violet but does have a 1 dark factor, so the violet is deeper than the whitefacec violet baby in the above picture.
